What is Breathwork?

Breathwork can be seen as an umbrella term, covering a wide variety of styles, techniques and methods where the breath and life force energy is channeled throughout the body. 

 

Essentially, Breathwork is the use of Breath awareness and Conscious breathing for growth, healing, personal awakening and  transformation in mind, body and spirit. Breathwork as a whole takes you beyond traditional cognitive therapies to provide a deeper, non-verbal path of healing, where the intelligence of your body and life force energy takes the lead.

Breathwork can be categorised in the following areas; Breath Awareness, Breath Regulation and Breath Transformation. These three parts form "The ART of Breathwork", a term developed by Dr Philippa Wheble and Dr Ela Manga, Founder of Breathwork Africa

A ~ Breath Awareness ~ 

​

Close your eyes. Allow yourself to simply observe your breath. Just check in, see where it’s at, deep or shallow, calm or anxious?  Notice your chest and abdomen rise on the inhale, and fall on the exhale. Notice any subtle sensations and let your body breathe how it wants.

 

Enjoy the rhythm of your body breathing. Almost having a sense that you are being breathed. When you are ready, open your eyes. Notice how the breath made you aware of your posture, feelings, emotions or patterns in this moment. An incredible tool for Self Awareness.

R ~ Breath Regulation ~ 

​

When we use the breath as a tool for Self Regulation, there are several breathing techniques which focus on specific needs and benefits. We can channel our breath to induce specific results, such as; cooling, warming, energising, relaxing, focusing and greater mental clarity.

 

They are simple and effective and can easily be incorporated into your daily life. The Sanskrit term "Pranayama" refers to Breath Regulation techniques. Literally meaning "Life Force Expansion or Control". Please get in touch if you need to incorporate Balancing, Energising and Relaxing Breathing Techniques into your daily life.

T ~ Breath Transformation ~

When we experience the breath as a tool for Self Transformation, we wake up to breath intelligence and our capacity to relax within intensity. Through various techniques and methods we can evoke a transpersonal experience, activating life force energy to support adaptation, new perspective (neural pathways) and physical healing.

 

We create a temporary disruption in the cellular chemistry to facilitate a release of blockages and stuck energy (Trauma and Stress). A powerful approach that integrates insights from modern consciousness research, science, transpersonal psychology and mystical traditions of the world.    

 

The type of Transformational Breathing technique that I teach is called, " Conscious Breathwork" or "Conscious Connected Breathing". Please see Conscious Breathwork for more information on this technique.
